CIEL, meaning “sky” in French, is a friendly campaign character created to reflect the heart of Joe Tay’s Markham Regional Councillor campaign.

Inspired by both sky and water, CIEL represents "Openness" to ideas, to change, to act, to listen, everyday care, renewed hope, and a sincere desire to help neighbourhood life flow better. The French name offers a respectful nod to Canada’s shared heritage, while reminding us that every neighbourhood in Markham lives under the same sky, with many backgrounds, cultures, and stories. Under that shared Markham sky, Joe believes our diversity, like water when blend well, is strongest when we are united by the values that make Canada home: respect, freedom, responsibility, fairness, and care for one another.

CIEL points toward a new horizon for Markham:
One where every resident is heard, every neighbourhood is valued, and every background can be proud to call Canada home.
